Profile of a graduate

A graduate of the master degree in the computer science has deep theoretical and methodological knowledge in the key areas in the field, such as, e.g., computability theory, automata and formal languages, logic programming, computational complexity, cryptology. By the use of optional courses he can specialize in one of the following areas: logic of information systems, theoretical computer science, neural networks, or security of computer networks. He is capable of applying his skills and knowledge creatively in praxis, as well as of analysis and tackling hard problems concerning information processing. He can also evaluate critically known solutions of such problems, he is quick on the uptake social, moral, juridical, and economic problems related to his profession. In the course of his practical training, he will gain experience in the area of the database systems, system programming and operation systems, object-oriented programming, as well as the architecture of information systems. He will also gain capability of making system analysis, taking into account their complexity and efficiency. He will become able to design suitable algorithmic solutions for critical components, to specify, design, implement, and maintain modern software systems, as well as to analyze and modify existing software systems. He can cooperate efficiently in software-developing teams, and keep track of the latest news and development in his area during the lifetime. After graduating his study, he can manage a position of a programmer, analyzer, or possibly a position of a head of a developing team for large informational system applications in the commercial area, as well as in the government administration. He is also able to carry on his study, in the PhD degree, and participate in teaching process at university.

Scope of the absolvents

Graduates are able to analyse systems regarding their complexity and effectiveness as well as develop suitable algoritmic solutions for critical components. They can develop, implement and maintain modern software systems, and analyse and modify existing software systems. They can efficiently work in a development team, they follow the newest development in their research area and acquire new expertise. After graduation they can be empployed as programmers, analysts, or leaders of teams developing extensive IT system applications in the private sector, as well as the state administration. Additionally, they are well suited to continue their studies in a doctoral programme and engange in teaching at the university level.

Accomodation, food and free time of the students

Students receive accommodation according to regulations passed by the University Administration of P.J. Šafárik University in Košice.

Entrance exam

Applicant is accepted into the maste’s programme without an entrance exam, if the master programme is a acontinuation of the bachelor study programme in the same subject, and if the applicant passed a state examination with the required result equivalent to the state examinations of the bachelor study programme of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at UPJŠ. The standard study-period of the master study programme in that case is two years. If the applicants do not meet the criteria listed above, they can be accepted into the master’s programme on the basis of the results of an entrance exam. In that case, the standard study-period is two or three years. The standard study-period is decided on the basis of the results of the entrance exam and the relevance of the bachelor programme the applicant graduated in.

Requirements for accepting foreign students

Foreign students are accepted on the basis of a contract. There is no tuition fee for study in English.
